Implants were developed almost 50 years ago and have truly been a miracle for hundreds of thousands of patients around the world! Implants can be used in any bony area of the body but in dentistry they are small titanium cylinders placed in the jawbone to replace lost teeth.

Today's modern implant treatment can replace everything from a single missing tooth to a completely missing arch. Bridges and partial dentures address the short-term cosmetic problems of missing teeth, but do nothing to stop bone loss. Bridges also require that 2 or more teeth be prepared to serve as abutments (posts) for a bridge, leaving them at a much greater risk for cavities and endodontic failure. If the original abutment teeth fail, more healthy teeth must be sacrificed to serve as posts, while you continue to lose bone beneath the bridge.

With implants, however, the healthy teeth are left alone. Dental implants, like natural teeth, also transmit chewing forces to the jawbone, which reduces bone loss. This is why many leading dental organizations now recognize dental implants as the standard of care for tooth replacement.

Dr. Schulze has been restoring implants for over twenty five years, and has kept up with the ever-changing science of implantology, studying Implant Prosthodontics at the renowned Misch Implant Institute.

Simple as well as much more sophisticated treatment is being rendered on a routine basis at the Island Center for Dental Excellence. When developing a treatment plan, Dr. Schulze must take into account a myriad of elements dealing with the overall dental health of the patient. Implant treatment must be engineered and thought out much more than traditional dental services. It is as important to know when to incorporate an implant in the treatment of a patient as it is not to use implants.
