Gum Contouring

Do you have gum tissue that extends too far down your teeth? You may have what is colloquially known as a “gummy” smile. Whether this issue stems from bone deterioration, medication use, genetics, or disease, a gummy smile frequently causes individuals to feel self-conscious about themselves and their smiles.
At Island Tower Dentistry, Dr. Van Dyke, Dr. Whelen, and our staff offer laser gum contouring as an option to patients who want to make their smiles more appealing and symmetrical.

Gum Contouring and You

If you feel that your gums extend too far down your teeth, or if you’re unhappy with other aspects of your gum tissue, laser gum contouring can correct the following:

  • Too much gum tissue
  • Teeth that appear uneven or misshaped
  • Receding gum tissue
  • Overhanging gums
  • Teeth that appear too small
Laser gum contouring can usually be completed with relative ease in a single visit. A dentist will gently numb the area with anesthesia to prevent any discomfort. Then, a laser carefully sculpts the gum line to show less and to promote greater symmetry. There is little chance of infection as the laser cauterizes the gums. Most patients report little, if any pain. The results last a lifetime and you can see them right away!
